Key Considerations for Cotton Crops


Cotton has a long frost-free period requirement and a high requirement for heat units, so it does well in climates that are temperate to sub-tropical. Though cotton doesn’t need a lot of water, it does require water at very specific stages. It grows well in a broad range of soils, as it is able to efficiently access water in fine-textured soils with high water holding capacity.

Cotton is very sensitive to pest pressures, especially early in the growing season and during fruiting.

  • Nitrogen — Key for bud, root and boll development, and should be applied in split applications throughout the season.
  • Phosphorus — A key nutrient for cotton crops, as it’s important for plant establishment, root development, early growth and fruit maturation.
  • Potassium — Plays a key role in ensuring maximum yield and fiber quality, as well as water use efficiency and disease prevention.
  • Zinc, Manganese & Boron — Micronutrients important for growth.
