Meet the Nutrient Use Efficiency People™: Paul Beck

Although he didn’t grow up on a farm, it’s really no surprise that Paul Beck has spent a big chunk of his professional career in agriculture. One would be hard-pressed to find someone else who loves the outdoors and has an appreciation for the beauty of nature and life than Beck, Verdesian Life Sciences’ Vice President of Global Marketing.

“My dad, who did grow up on a farm, was always trying to recreate the ‘farm experience,’” says Paul, who was born in Sandy, OR, a small town between Portland and Mount Hood. “On our six acres at different times growing up we had chickens, pigs, goats, a donkey and even a pond stocked with rainbow trout.”

That same pond would prove to offer a wonderful lesson on work and commerce. Paul’s summer job was helping kids catch fish in the family pond. On one occasion, auto racing legend Mario Andretti stopped to fish after a race in Portland.

“Best tip I ever got,” says Paul.

Paul studied International Business (with a minor in German) at Linfield College in McMinnville, OR. He earned his MBA from Duke University, which brought him to North Carolina’s Research Triangle area. (In addition to his family, Paul’s loves include Oregon football and Duke basketball.) Paul’s career in sustainability and agriculture began when spent seven years with John Deere. He also worked four years with Bayer before coming to Verdesian to reshape the company’s marketing strategy.

“I absolutely love working at Verdesian because of the great people and products,” says Paul. “We have an opportunity because of our products and technologies to stand out from everyone else in agriculture. I like to say that we should seek to deliver a ‘Ritz-Carlton’ experience to all of our stakeholders when it comes to marketing Verdesian products. But that all starts with our people. We have the best people in agriculture. I truly believe that.”

Being the lover of outdoors that he is, it’s hard to keep Paul chained to a desk. His wife, Megan, and their three boys Harrison (15), Eli (12) and Asher (8) are almost always on the move and seeking adventure such as mountain biking, skiing, surfing, camping, rafting and more. Paul, who has run six marathons, is also quick to extend his love of the outdoors and exercise to his love of Verdesian; he was part of the inaugural Verdesian Tuna Run team that combined to run from Raleigh to Atlantic Beach, NC – a race of 200 miles.
