Technical Development Manager - West Coast

Reports to:  Chief Technology Development Officer

Location:  West Coast

Department:  Technical Development

Status:  Exempt (Professional)

Benefit Class:  Full-Time

Position Summary:  This position is responsible for providing technical support, guidance, field trial demonstrations and training for Verdesian’s sales representatives and customers. ­­­­­­­­The Technical Development Manager assumes responsibility and leadership for all technical elements (labels, product use direction, training materials, recommendations, field trials, and technical positioning of VLSCI products) for his/her assigned territory.  The person is accountable for technical support of the Verdesian nutritional and plant health product line to the Verdesian Sales reps and customers with the objective of meeting or exceeding established sales goals while reducing liability costs and maintaining the technical integrity of product positions. The Technical Development Manager is responsible for ensuring that Marketing, Sales, and Product Development are in alignment for the area in which they support. Regular interaction with marketing, product development, sales, and regulatory is critical.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the technical strategy and feasibility for VLS products and technologies within assigned territory
  • Business-to-business technical leadership in interactions with Marketing, Sales, Regulatory, Product Development and customers
  • Technical assessment and sustainable technical recommendations for assigned products and their positioning, labeling and for inclusion in business plans
  • Technical training and direction to VLSCI sales representatives and staff on all data generation
  • Technical liaison between the sales team and VLSCSI customers
  • Oversee, track and benchmark the field development of proprietary and licensed technologies within assigned territory
  • Be a core member of a product/program/concept development team
  • Identify, inspect and liaise with 3rd-party research firms and personnel and collate, analyze, and summarize relevant data for development and/or commercial use
  • Responsible for technical elements (labels, technical editing, product use direction, training materials, recommendations, and technical positioning) of VLS products and technologies
  • Identification, prioritization, and pursuit of new opportunities (label improvements, Sec 18s & 24c, 2ee and label extensions)
  • Assistance/leadership in dealing with alleged product claims
  • Responsible for all field trial development (customer and University) and corresponding data generation within assigned portfolio/territory

Qualifications:

  • Ideal Candidate will live in California
  • Minimum work experience of 10 years in technical sales/agronomist role
  • Minimum education of MS degree in Soil Science, Agronomy, or related field (Ph.D. preferred)

Marketing Manager - Cary, NC

Reports to:  VP, Global Marketing

Location:  Cary, NC

Position Summary:  This position is responsible for the management of technology platforms and corresponding brands from concept throughout products’ lifecycle and is continually looking for ways to optimize the profitability of those products.   The Marketing Manager will coordinate efforts with multiple internal business function and sales teams to identify, direct, prioritize, maintain, and align focus on portfolio maintenance, mid-range portfolio planning and development, and long-range business optimization.  The Marketing Manager will also be responsible for the development and execution of all marketing programs and strategies to help achieve sales volumes and profit objectives. Establish long-term Asset Portfolio Strategies for assigned active ingredient portfolio. Strategies must articulate operational and financial objectives for product launch, lifecycle management and lay out activities and responsibilities for brand identity development, product development, regulatory and product supply; Establish long-term Brand Strategies including positioning by crop, technical and brand performance objectives, Value Proposition, distribution strategy, grower influence strategy and pricing; Set clear objectives for development and manufacturing activities to ensure the proper development and registration of new products, and expansion of developed products. Build brands with clear positioning within relevant crops and clear price corridors to maximize profitability within targeted grower segments. Liaise with agency staff, industry associations and internal colleagues to direct development of brand identity.

Product Maintenance Essential Functions:

Portfolio Management

  • Be the “quarterback” for a portfolio of products and coordinate product activities with sales, operations, regulatory, finance, customer service, research and development, 3rd party relations, and sourcing to ensure that quality products are delivered according to forecasted and budgeted goals.
  • Conduct profit/cost analysis, monitoring, ensure accurate cost of goods and portfolio optimization.
  • Provide competitive analysis and strategies/marketing programs to maximize returns.
  • Internal coordination of product activities through New Product Development, New Product Introduction/Launch plans and Supply and Operations Planning (S&OP) process leadership.

Sales Support

  • Responsible for supporting their products with respective sales teams to maximize sales and profit goals.
  • Coordinate product training, positioning and ongoing support in collaboration with Sales Management
  • Assist with customer visits, industry tradeshows, conferences and/or meetings
  • Act as sales and product advocate, coordinating field input into actionable initiatives.
  • Work with Communications Manager to help coordinate development of sales support materials, communication tactics, etc.
  • Involvement in sales forecasting review and validation.
  • Provide collaborative input and development to respective sales teams on pricing, programs and marketing programs as appropriate.

Marketing

  • Develop the value proposition and positioning of both current and future products and projects. 
  • Develop value add pricing strategies and metrics.
  • Continue to drive the channel strategy in coordination with Sales Management
  • Develop marketing strategies and programs that address specific customer needs and achieve VLSCI business goals.
  • Attend customer meetings and lead strategic planning sessions to align with medium & long-term goals.
  • Set market and product specific goals and strategies.
  • Capture and communicate competitive market intelligence.
  • Work with other suppliers and 3rd parties on co-development, supply, and proprietary product development to enhance the current portfolio.
  • Develop and transfer strategies and ideas into critical actions and monitor their implementation.

  • Analyze and identify new market trends/opportunities in close collaboration with other internal interfaces (Business Development, Sales, etc)
  • Develop post-patent strategy 1 year prior to technology patent expiration
  • Manage product life cycle through new product initiatives, post patent marketing programs, product enhancements, etc.

Mid-Range Planning & Implementation:

Product Launch Excellence

  • Ensure that all new products are launched in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Responsible for the creation of production forecast for new products and product financial analysis with input from respective sales teams.
  • Prepare and implement all product introduction related activities including product training, sales collateral, and product launch plan.

Long-Range Strategic Planning

  • Portfolio Optimization – responsible for continually analyzing the portfolio of products in each market segment to ensure a long range, sustainable product offering and to lead a yearly product rationalization process.
  • Market Access Optimization – In concert with the respective sales leads the Marketing Manager will be responsible to ensure that all respective active ingredients/products are maximizing their potential through all market access points and will be an integral part of developing a plan via alternate market access points, traditional, or third-party.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree (Agribusiness, Marketing or Agronomy related degree preferred)
  • 8+ years’ experience in product or marketing management, with Sales & Technical experience preferred. AG/Crop Protection background or related experience would be an advantage

Position Summary:  This position is responsible for developing a solid base of retail dealers and sales according to the established marketing plan of Verdesian and the service and training of potential clients in the use of VLS products within the assigned territory.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Establish and incorporate routed sales calls within assigned territory
  • Develop clientele base of customers, dealers, and clients
  • Anticipate customer needs and contact regularly with appropriate communication
  • Increase sales to attain maximum market penetration for appropriate VLS products
  • Possess a working knowledge of EPA and state registrations
  • Cooperate with Field Research team in assigned territory
  • Facilitate business relationships contributing to public relations
  • Forecast and develop budget for sales
  • Maintain a clean driving record, and ability to travel long distances.
